London CND is excited to share an opportunity to support the establishment of a new group in Finchley. Three committed residents from East Finchley have come together to explore creating a Finchley CND branch, and today they are reaching out to gauge interest and invite participation from fellow members in the area.

This proposed group, by pledging to address key issues locally, represents an exciting new path for our campaigns in North London. If you are based in Finchley or the surrounding area, we strongly encourage you to read their message and consider lending your support. This is a valuable chance to help expand our network and strengthen our London movement.

Below, you will find a letter outlining their vision, concerns, and proposed first steps.

Dear Friend,

We are reaching out to members in our area, Finchley, to see if there is an appetite to set up a local CND branch. 

We are three residents of East Finchley who met on the London Region CND coach to a recent demonstration against the siting of American nuclear weapons at USAF Lakenheath in Suffolk, the first American nuclear weapons to be sited on British soil for 15 years - and only 70 odd miles away from us.

Our own government is driving rearmament by increasing spending on Defence to 2.5% of GDP (whilst claiming there is not enough money for things that we actually need) and has fed the flames of war in the Middle East. By allowing American missiles to be sited in Britain, they have increased the build-up of nuclear tension in Europe arising from the Ukraine war. Recent developments, including Donald Trump’s re-election, underscore the urgency of taking action.

War is never in the interests of normal people. The only way to roll back this frightening momentum to war will be for those same ordinary people to make it clear we don’t want rearmament or nuclear weapons. The people of Britain have a strong tradition of successful action in this area and we know there is widespread public support in getting rid of nuclear weapons (YouGov survey May 2024).

We feel we could take action locally to raise awareness, support campaigners living near USAF Lakenheath and to feed into the anti-war movement.
