Newham Council is holding an alternative to the DSEI, the London Defence & Security Equipment International Arms Fair, 10 September. Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz will be making clear Newham Council’s opposition to the Defence and Security Equipment International (DSEI) arms fair held in the borough. Newham’s peace exhibition involves cultural displays, film screenings, talks and debates, and takes place 10 September, 51 Freemasons Rd, E16 3PJ.
Receiving a petition from Newham Against the Arms Fairs recently, Fiaz said: ‘It’s abhorrent that such an event should happen in our corner of the world, in a borough which is the most diverse reflecting many communities with links across the globe who have been affected by conflict, displacement and the horror of war. The so-called ‘equipment’ on sale peddles a culture of violence at a time when the world needs peace and collective action to avert conflict. It’s important we work with partners and campaigners to show that we do not want it here.’
