On 6 August 1945, the US dropped an atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. The firestorm destroyed five square miles of the city and an estimated 100,000-180,000. Three days later a second bomb on Nagasaki added a further 50,000-100,000 to the casualty figures.

In the intervening years, nuclear accidents, both civil and military, have added to the toll of deaths and destruction. The 1984 explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear plant in Ukraine gave off nearly twice the radiation released by the Hiroshima bomb.
